HIMADRI

'HIMADRI' Indian Arctic Research Station


Now India comes among the countries carrying out studies in both poles (Antarctica and Arctic), after the official inauguration of 'HIMADRI' on 1st July 2008. The MoU signing between National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR)and Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) opens new and good oppurtunities for the Indian Polar Research communities.


HIMADRI is located at Ny-Ă…lesund is situated at 78° 55´ N, 11° 56´ E on the west coast of Spitsbergen, the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago.The Svalbard archipelago is part of the high arctic region. It is the place where international cooperation can be seen clearly, twelve institution of 10 different countries have their station and now India is one of them. Continuing with the Indian tradition of preseving history and heritage. Indian station building during the mining days it was the school for the children living in town and build in 1917.
